Now I know just about ALL of you aint farmers, just a couple of us on here.

BUT

Thought  I would post that yesterday it was announced that there has been another outbreak of Foot and Mouth in Britain.  Last one was in 2001.  This news will be absolutely devastating for farmers over there.

If anyone is interested - here is a link to a UK cow forum.  It will take you directly to the foot and mouth discussion thread.  I am sure that it will make interesting reading as the days/weeks unfold.

Oh well...you can expect our meat prices in the supermarkets to sky rocket again as they send every spare bit of beef we have here in NZ over there...

Yeah the poor buggers. Having to go through this a second time in just a few years would be devastating.

Another Suspected Case Of FMD

Tue 07-Aug-2007 11:46AM

Another suspected case of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease has been reported near the site of the original outbreak in England and a new cull has been ordered.

The suspected case is not on the first infected premises, but is in the same protection zone.

Britain's chief veterinarian, Debby Reynolds, told the BBC that culling has already begun.

She told Sky News that vets had discovered cattle with worrying signs suggestive of foot-and-mouth during a visit to a farm close to the one where the original outbreak was found.

Up to 100 animals were to be slaughtered. Samples have been taken to a laboratory for tests.

About 120 cattle have been slaughtered at the infected farm and a neighbouring one. Two animals have so far tested positive for foot-and-mouth.

Dr Reynolds said investigators were looking at whether recent floods played a role in transmitting the virus.

A possible link is being investigated between the outbreak and two animal health laboratories located a few miles from where the virus infected cattle at a farm in southeast England.

A movement ban on animals has been in force across Britain since the foot-and-mouth cases were first confirmed on Friday.

The European Union has banned all British exports of fresh meat, live animals and milk products following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

Japan and South Korea have temporarily halted pork imports, while the United States has said it will ban imports of pork and pork products.

Ireland has banned imports of meat and non-pasteurised milk as well as livestock from Britain.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said while visiting a disease control centre close to the affected area, that a major national effort was under way to halt the infection.

The government hopes to avoid a repeat of an outbreak in 2001 when 6 million animals were slaughtered and the cost to the economy was an estimated STG8.5 billion.

Two New Suspected Foot And Mouth Cases

Wed 15-Aug-2007 7:35AM

Two new suspected cases of foot and mouth disease are being investigated in southern England raising fears that an existing outbreak of the livestock disease may not have been contained.

One of the suspected cases was in the county of Kent, to the east of Surrey. The second suspected case was in Surrey, but outside the original disease area.

Authorities had hoped they had contained the outbreak in Surrey.

The agriculture ministry said 3km "temporary control zones" have been set up around a farm in Kent and an unidentified premises in Surrey as "precautionary measures following inconclusive assessments of clinical symptoms" detected in farm animals.

Livestock movements are banned in the control zones.

A national ban on animal movements has been in place since the confirmation on 3 August of foot and mouth in Surrey, although there are some exceptions such as the movement of animals to slaughter, to milking or for emergency treatment.

More than 570 animals have been destroyed to date and the European Union and other countries have banned British meat and dairy exports.

Farmers say the trade curbs are costing them STG1.8 million (US$3.6 million) per day
