looks farked..sorry.

it's rotten & only the termites holding hands are holding it together.

replacement would be easiest. you may find one at a second hand or demo place in reasonbly good nick.

do you have any handy men where you live?

  thanks for stating the obvious

I know it needs replacing, but I don't know HOW to replace it!

and yep the secondhand shop has some, but I needed to know the exact measurements to be able to buy one. and some weatherboards need replacing.

all builders are busy - seems there's a boom on

well, the builder who came around to do a quote (and was supposed to post it out over a week ago  ) said that I could lengthen the window a bit if necessary, but obviously the width had to be right - but if I get one a little smaller, can't I just pack it?

the other problem is handling it by myself, but anyway, first I need to know how to take out the old one and fit the new one

tools include: hammer, drill, jigsaw, sanders, screwdrivers, level, tape and others not necessary for this particular job...

thankfully my degree in 'stating the obvious' wasn't a total waste of time.

can that be done by distance learning?  or is it a classroom only kinda thing?

nah...the degree is a life skill thing...anyways..

if you get a wider window you'll need to shift the studs..bit of a hassle.

if you go smaller then you'll need to replace or extend the weatherboards...bit of a hassle.

you will need at least 1 other to help with getting the old out & the new in....2 would be best.

if i were you...I'd call the chippy & ask if he's got a price yet.

otherwise, first you'll need to source a replacement window. you'll need to measure accurately the total length & depth from outside jam to outside jam. (thats the total frame). then you'll need to remove the outside flashing (top of window).
next you need to remove the gib from around the frame on the inside.
then you get a hacksaw blade & use that to cut through any nails that run through the frame & into the studs and lintle(sp).

once all those nails are cut then the window should just push out.

then get the new window in place and have someone inside ready to pin( nail but not all the way) the frame in place.

then it's simple a case of getting it flush, level & plumb., replace the dodgy weatherboards, re gib..plaster paint & drink Speights! easy!
