The kids want to get into photoshop and publishing software for their homework projects.

can anyone reccomend good affordable software that would help them?

the gimp is meant to be good for photoshop type stuff

not tried it yet myself, but it's free

This probably isnt what you want to hear - but my opinion is that oyu cant beat photoshop...you are better of to pay for it if you cant get a cracked version.

I've heard The Gimp is good, but never tried it myself ... The same software library it uses is used on php based websites(including TLP's avatar resizing), and it's pretty good for that
