Pakistani and Samoan are different though, Samoan don't own anything, KFC and the Shock Shop may lose a bit of business though

the hunters would earn their keep by the amount of possums they caught, and while some would make it their living, others would do it for fun and pocket money.

not all areas are overly accessible but it is not about eradication, but control and the possums would take themselves eventually to the hunter, it would create a balance.
Where they are not accessible, there is not the problem with TB infection to cattle nor farmed deer either.

To start with there would be many who would take advantage of the bountry system, but as the hunting got harder, the hunters that did it for fun would fall by the way side, leaving the hard core to maintain the status.

Like posioning with 1080 it would be an ongoing thing but environmentally friendly.

and of course it is all easier said than done, with plenty of hick ups & headaches to iron out - but that is something that the proper homework would pick up on and sort out.

Feel free to pick up the idea and work on it.

are there many fulltime hunters do you know?

Can't tell you about other regions, but the Taranaki Regional Council requires all farms to have a possum management plan, which usually takes the form of an annual visit from an approved contractor. Cyanide baits are the preferred method, and  the contractor repeats the procedure as neccesary until numbers trapped are less than 10% of the traps laid.

TB is a hazard to cattle, but would not neccesarily be an issue  to humans. Large areas of NZ have been TB free for many years, and the disease is not readily passed on to humans. Infected possums carry the disease as lesions on the lungs, while the only practical source of meat for human consumption would be the hind legs and the back steaks.

Possum meat has previously been exported to Korea, where the animal is unknown. There is no word in Korean for possum, so it was marketed as 'tree bear'.

A hunter friend recently acquired a permit to trap on a Department of Conservation 800acre block. His estimated yield was 1500 possums, which was more or less the same as when the block was trapped three years previously.

It takes about 15-18 possums to produce 1kg of fur, which can sell for around $80.

Depends on where you are. I have a few mates that do it full time, more Possums now than Deer, there is less money in Venison nowadays.

They make good money too.

I don't know where, but I was talking to a couple of mates at the club the other night and they said that it was now getting made here in nz. I doubt that it would be widely broadcast.

Willow, you gotta realise that this is a necessary evil. If the Possum population wasn't controlled, it would not only f**k the Bush and destroy the habitat for hundreds of native species, it would also destroy our Farming industry with the spread of Bovine Tuberculosis. It's not as simple as it looks.

Not many possum guys use Gin traps anymore, it's too expensive, heavy to carry, and too cruel. Bait stations are the most popular method nowadays. Cyanide is a much more humane way of killing than 1080, which is a very slow death.

They may not have introduced the Possum, but they did introduce Deer, Chamois, Rabbits, Thar, etc..... for sport hunting, some of which (Deer escpecially)caused enormous amounts of damage to the habitat.

If you have time, google the rabbit problem in NZ.

i knew there was a big rabbit problem in australia, but i didn't know you had one in nz, we have the same here in some places, unfortunately, many still have mixamatosis, which is absolutely vile, i believe that that was introduced to keep the numbers down but it's results are vile and some of the babies born with deformaties are pitiful. I understand how many creatures are real pests and destroy the natural habitats but what upsets me so much is that these species were introduced by man for whatever reason and it has ultimately backfired, we have the same here with grey squirrels, also with green parrots, they number thousands in parks in london, they have decimated our native birds as they don't make nests but steal our birds nests so the british birds have nowhere to lay eggs and are ultimately dying out. I see that their numbers have escalated and they do lots of damage but when the only option is to slaughter them (sometimes in really cruel ways) is heartbreaking to me, as they are all living breathing creatures, that feel pain and fear, and if they had been left to their native habitats have as much right to exist as we do, and for anyone who says they are vermin or only animals, then i pity them, because what i have seen of some human beings, they are worse vermin than any animal could ever be, i have never seen an animal torture it's own young or piss off and leave them in danger while they go to the pub. The earth was made to accomodate all species and respect should be given to all creatures in equal measure (tree hugger signing off.....  )

humans caused the mess, they are also responsible for cleaning up the mess.

so many things we'd change if only we could go back in time.

and tree hugging, literally is nice - ever  lent  against (pfft hugged) a tree in the middle of a cold night- they have this wonderful warm feeling to them.

Everyone should experience it
