1 hunter is killed every year in NZ by another hunter, 21 are injured in the same period of time.

Apparently accidentally.

One of my uncles shot one of his mates deer stalking a few years back, his mate ran at him waving his arms and my uncle shot him thinking it was a stag, bullet went through one side and out the other round the waist area, and the guy survived

I haven't been shot, but I've been shot at twice. f**kin scary. I'm like tadpole, I rarely get into the bush these days. I've had 2 mates killed in the last 2 years. One was sitting on a bank eating his lunch. He was shot in the head............wearing a bright orange hat.

There's a few reasons why.. Most incidents happen because people don't observe the number one firearm rule.

Positively identify your target.

I have seen people fire at noises in the bush for f**ks sake! And Colour!

Also, it's sad to say, these days the young onesdon't get the same safety drummed into them that we did when we were kids. I had my first shotgun when I turned 16 and my first rifle that same year. Now I don't know a 16 year old at the moment that I would trust with any firearm unsupervised.

when I worked at a hunting lodge in Scotland I remember one young guy being sent off the shoot by the head gamekeeper cause he spun around to follow the bird (and shot where all the other people were)  eek  didn't get the bird and didn't hit anyone else either...  eek

(one of those snooty Brit hunts where everyone is in a line and a bunch of other people flush the game toward them)

That is so tru Red...wats the next rule?

Check your firing zone!
Always point the muzzle in a safe direction...the ground
Treat every firearm as loaded
Never mix alcohol or drugs while using firearms

Theres 2 others but the above are the top five.

Add to rule number one..

Never shoot at..shape,sound,colour without positively identifying your target!

Yea Red I have my firearms lisence and have a number of firearms and go hunting in the
ureweras often and stick to the rules, yep sure we shoot beer cans etc but as soon as the
piss comes out, away go the guns. I wont even let anyone come possum shooting with me
if they have had a drink! Im so vigilant and serious when it comes to firearms,I never ever
want a death of one of my hunting mates on my concience.

Will have to get some of my photos up on here, they all mostly the old photos and before
i had a digital camara, got a great photo of me and a big red...deer that is mate

I agree with buggy and Red.  Most kids don't have the self control and I suspect nor do many adults any more - devolving as a species, not evolving.

I think the safest people with firearms are those that grew up with them, I used to shoot sparrows as target practice by the time ! was 10 (and give them to the cat so they weren't wasted) to get my eye in with a slug gun... maybe all those hiding so many kids got those days (as politically incorrect as they were) did something for people - it made them think twice about consequences before taking action eh??  Made people careful.

One of my fathers favourite sayings were - "don't care was made to care".

You always positively identified your target and you always made sure the bullet was not going to harm (or ricochet on) anything else if you missed. BEFORE pulling the trigger.
Simple.

not sad - stupid:  fools and guns are a bad mix.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Hunting in NZ is part of our culture as much as it is/was in the Uk. It's a pity more kids aren't taught Bushcraft and Hunting skills, there would definately be less juvenile crime if that was the case.

And I don't see myself as a fool.... More of a f**kwit really
