Story in our local paper yesterday:
our council has decided they'd like to own a casino, to help offset the taxpayers rates.

First they have to build the damned thing, but seem to have it all worked out, even down to inviting some bigwig fancypants peeps to the opening, next year

what farked me off is the spokesman said that "people were 100% behind the idea" - duh, I wasn't asked! I would not be adding to the 100% statistic.

Don't we have enough problems in the country that we have to add more gambling to it?

and should a government local body even be investing in something like this? 90million its going to take, I believe they quoted. Investors both local and from overseas already interested...

what pro's? con's?

waste of money, who's going to go? maybe a novelty for the first year, but southlanders
aren't the sort of people to go to a casino on a regular basis, it's all you can do to to get them
to go more than a dollar each way on the favorite at the new yeras races!!
or has there been an influx of well healed gamblers looking for somewhere to go in
invercargill lately?

buggered if I know - the nightlife on offer leaves a lot to be desired, thats for sure.

The Ivercargill and Mataura licensing trusts make a s**t-load of $$ from alcohol, so that's probably where a lot of the revenue will come from.

also (I'd forgotten) the council has thought they'd set up a moonshine still in the hills and sell the whiskey exclusively thru the casino

Will they draft in some librarians as hookers?
How about some parking wardens as security?

The possibilities for career development are endless!

This is pitiful. A thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat. What a hype.
