A right action is right because God commands it; or God commands a right action because it is right.

if you don't want to think of God, just insert the highest deity you believe runs the show

A right action is right because Maori commands it; or Maori commands a right action because it is right.

if you don't want to think of God, just insert the highest deity you believe runs the show (Maori)

Right, wrong and God are all concepts created by humans. If the human race ceased to exist, so would right, wrong and God.

that leads me to another interesting question

if God didn't set up the commandments to live by as a moral code, would we humans still live by a moral code, of right and wrong?

Yes. Every civilization had/has a code of laws and lores. The commandments however were merely specific to the Abrahamic faiths. The concepts of "right & wrong" did not start nor end with the commandments.

the concept was created by humans yes, but the question assumes that God is real and therefore he wrote the commandments...and the gospels of Jesus.

Assumptions should be challenged, particularly when logic can offer alternative explanations.
