you could try the small varieties of sunflowers, smurf, such as Teddy Bear - can still be grown in pots but not taking up as much room
ice-plants might do well, portulacas - they all have succulant-type leaves for holding water (I think).

I haven't really done hanging baskets, but I've noticed plants like petunias, lobelia in them.
and remember you can grow veg in pots, and amongst the flowers too (helps hide them from the bugs)
