http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/asia/3742220/Prosecutors-to-seek-serious-jail-time-for-anti-whaling-activist

Regardless of your views on Whaling, were his actions acceptable? And should he face the consequences for them?

The rules for conduct in international waters are pretty clear. He broke them and should face the consequences. Hopefully the Japanese judicial system has a bit more spine than ours. The notion that the Waihopai communications base vandals should be found not guilty because 'they felt that they were doing the right thing'[ and by implication the Sea Sheperd rabble and any other bunch of self-absorbed nutbars] is ridiculous.

I think that Bill English is an incompetent fraudster, does that give me the right to throw foul-smelling chemicals at him and impede his business? of course not.

This twerp has challenged the Japanese nation in an unacceptable manner, and will come to realise that they are not as wishywashy and pc as our justice system.

he's guilty of being a complete dick and a showboating cowboy!!
the captain should have put him in a boat and taken him back to the
his ship and told him to stop being silly. there is no way he was going to "make an arrest"
technically i guess it was an act of piracy, but the japanese are doing what they believe is
their right and they don't tend to listen to the outside world when it comes to
beliefs and rituals in japan.
buffoon was an idiot to think he would get away with it and if he gets 15 years it's his own stupid fault.
he should have bought a bigger and stronger boat kept doing what they had been if he
wanted to keep making a point. being carted off to japan to rot in a jail doesn't prove anything.

I wonder why a small nimble Boat like the Ady Gil was 'unable to manouvre out of the way and avoid a collision, even if the Shonan Maru II did change course.

my guess is that no one was at the helm as they were all making threatening gestures to prevent the progress of the whaling vessel

Well, from that video it would appear that if the Japanese had intended to, they could have rammed the far more convincingly.

I should imagine that it would be very difficult for the Ady Gil to get a clear look at their target with that much water being sprayed at them. The smart thing to do would have been to back off a bit.

And yet, just prior to the collision, it appears that Ady Gil starts moving forward into the path of the Ship........

I'm not Coy about it at all. I think he's an irresponsible arse and he should be tried and convicted. I'm not Pro-Whaling, but this issue is not about Whaling. It's about deliberately endangering peoples lives and taking the law into your own hands.

And Boarding that Ship was about the silliest thing I think anyone could have done!!!

The Ady Gil should have turned to Starboard to avoid a collision, you can see that (too late) the Whaling Ship turned to Port, but you need to realise the time it takes for a large vessel to respond.

It's Commonsense that a small Vessel keeps clear of a Large Vessel.

But the bottom line is that the Ady Gil should not have put herself in that position in the first place!

Also, you can see that The Ady Gil actually Accelerated shortly before the collision, putting herself right in the path of the larger vessel.

Japan has grown bold and is testing the international waters by this move with Bethune.
(No rellie BTW).
They're just waiting to see how far they can push things and if Bethune is sentenced to jail (for any length of time) and none of the anti-whaling governments make a noise, then Japan has effectively strengthened it's position on whaling.
Correct me if I'm wrong here but NZ has already started to fold by agreeing to a quota (for 'scientific' purposes) so Japan is taking it just that little bit further now with the Bethune thing.

Pete bethune assaulted a sailor with a glass jar full of rancid butter. To compound his stupidity, he then boarded someone else's boat in a publicity stunt designed to force the hand of the Japanese government. It's the equivalent of the attention-seeking idiot who flour-bomb the Springbok test back in '81, and we should not be surprised or dismayed if he gets sent to jail for his stupidity.
