I assume you mean Willie Jackson?

The guy's an idiot at the best of times, he's just trying to save his language - People obviously don't want to speak the language, otherwise they would, forcing people to learn a language that nobody wants to speak is ridiculous

Willie can just jump in the lake eek

It was compulsory when I went to school...No one got a choice, we HAD to do Maori Culture classes whether we wanted to or not.  f**k I hated school.

Funny thing is now I am an adult and can make my own mind up about these things I DO want to learn Te Reo

okay, Auckland then - so since it was compulsory in Auckland, you wouldn't need to learn it as an adult, because you already know it, right?

Can we please also have a few million of taxpayer dollars to teach people how to drive steam engines? apparently, we used to have thousands of steam engine workers, the skills are fast dwindling. eek

Have seen and heard only one Maori spokesperson (on the telly, dont know who he was) say that if Maori want to keep the language alive, they have to teach it and use it.
As the saying goes, 'use it or lose it'.
Willie and John just turned the topic into a bit of a farce instead of having a decent discussion or debate.

The taxpayer has provided ample opportunity through initiatives such as Maori radio stations, kohanga reo, immersion schools and Maori television channels for those who are interested to get in and learn the language. Being keen in principle is not enough justification to waste further public money. If Maori language facilities cannot attract enough people who are willing to get off their butts and actively use them, stop wasting public money on them.

In this day and age, it is relatively simple to archive the information for future reference. Nothing will be 'lost' it will simply be abandoned.

Hmm..they got the Maori channel and the majority of it is spoken in english.  They need to look at themselves and what they are doing before they go ranting on about it becoming a lost language.

it was compulsary in schhol whe the kids went
and then it was a choice in high school 5th form
my daughter took it for ncea and then pulled out as there was no teachers to teach
it so they would not have leart enough to pass the exams
the same thing happened the year befor

so if it is compulsary then they need to be able to back it up with teachers

I thought it was compulsory in all primary schools anyway.

The two primary schools inip went to both taught it. She used to come home speaking maori and when I asked her where she learnt that s**t she said at school they had to do it.

Its bulls**t, most of th emaoris I know arent even interested in speaking it.

FAir enough if you want to learn it, but dont force it on everyone elses children when they arent even maori.

f**k, next they will have their own hospitals with th ebest doctors because they have bad health. Theyll have their own f**kin TABs with better odds.

Bloody nig nogs.
