No pictures of giant Snapper, but here's a couple of bait stealers that hung around us all day at the mussel farms the other day...

Quote

Northland man lands giant tuna with his bare hands

Beach buggy enthusiast Aaron Cossill dragged a giant tuna to shore with nothing more than his bare hands and a hunting knife.

He and his son were driving along Ripiro Beach at  Dargaville in Northland on Saturday when they saw what looked like a dolphin flapping in the breakers.

"It's tail  was thrashing from side to side as it was being hit by a couple of big waves," he says. "I ran over and saw it was a huge tuna."

I'm not sure I do, they're pretty powerful fish and in waste deep water I'd expect him to come off second best against that, it was probably washed up on the beach

I reckon it must have been sick or injured. They are pelagic and would normally be unlikely to venture that close to the coast unless the continental shelf was close to the shore.

It gets better.... The warrant on the boat trailer had run out and I got a $200.00 ticket for that as well. It was a very expensive day, but we did bring home some really nice Snapper.

I do that too most of the time, or sometimes in foil with herbs and lemon in the oven...

I love smoking fish, I built a big smoker last year and when we get more than we can eat, I smoke some for the staff at work.

I will drop some off to Stu and Fraggles again soon....

Drizzle a bit of lemon over it too

The fish, not the engine

Is it wrong to say I've never forgotten my love of freshly smoked mullet.
Never mind the expensive fish.

Smoked Mullet was one of our most popular ones when I was working in Whitianga, sometimes it was so fat, the fat would drip off it and mess up the bottom of the smoker. I used to smoke the roe as well, big fat pieces of it.
