It's not just a river in Egypt

WWW
« on: Fri 1 July, 2011 - 10:45 am »

I got one a little while ago when my freeview box died. It took a little getting used to as it's not as flexible as a DVD but tons of features. Record on 2 channels watch a third. Only catch is this model has lots of faults. It's an UltraPlus and it keeps freezing and locking me out. I'm going to send it back to the supplier so I'm looking for recommendations for a good reliable tuner that can record on 2 channels and watch a third channel etc. Who has  a PVR they are happy with and what brand is it?

I'm past caring about cost, I've wasted hours on this one. I looked at Panasonic but where I live is rural so I have to use a satellite and I'm told the panasonic ones don't work with them
When digital is rolled out there are no plans to roll it out in my area so I think the panasonic PVR are out of the running

Go here: http://alatest.co.nz/c/digital-video-recorder-dvr-reviews/37/

If you select different brands from the drop-down menu, it gives you a review and a score

I personally have not but the suppliers have upgraded the software.

had endless problems with it, they upgaded software and it still failed
they reformatted it and downloaded the software again and it worked for a while but now it's failing

http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/ultraplus-f9000hd-digital-satellite-receiverpvr-pr-561.html

it failed 2x in the space of a few minutes last night. I left a phone message with the importer yesterday after the supplier referred me to him. No reply to phone message or email

Is Noel Leeming right that I can't use the Panasonic PVR???

yep the panasonic is a digital terrestrial unit, not satellite.

this guy has the vu duo unit  http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/TVs/Satellite-receivers/auction-387360534.htm
he's ok, not a fly by night, been in the industry for a few years. has 3-4 trademe names. haven't tried this unit so can't comment.

the other units are the DishTv ones, they have the freeview 'tick' so there is no messing around with programming and downloads, they have a good reputation  www.dishtv.co.nz

so you can watch one program and record another.
it's just that with terrestrial you have a tuner in the tv that lets you watch a third if you're
recording two

I've never seen that page before. I wonder if that's the upgrade I've already got. Sure it must be as I remember the installers saying that Jack didn't have the latest software on the website so they downloaded thew wrong version the first time I installed it.

Machine shouldn't be freezing

JJ do you sell the ultraplus and have you had any problems with them? Some of the reviews are obviously fake

yes but where there is no terrestrial reception the tv tuner is redundant.

Thanks JJ

The importer called me back. Turns out he is overseas but he got my email. He says it could be a faulty hard drive but he also said it’s formatted wrong so it may come right if the formatting is fixed. He said the installer used FAT32 instead of linux formatting and that it doesn’t have the latest software version loaded

He suggested I unplug the hard drive for a couple of days and see if it still records or wait until he gets back. Right now I can’t be bothered taking the top off the box to unplug the hard drive and I don't want to do without the recording option for a couple of days

ooh I want one of them!

I'm asking for my money back on mine. He now says there's a hard drive error but I'm not impressed with it and want something better. It's had too many problems

How does it record 4 channels with twin receivers?? And does it have options for series recording etc. I must go look up the consumer reviews on the vu duo as it sounds like what I want.

so i got my money back, where's the best place to buy a new pvr? the agents here so they're not going to sell any more as they had so much trouble with the ultraplus

i need one that does series recording, records 2 channels while you watch a third, skip searching (skip forward a minute, etc) and can be used with satellite
is that freeview shop the best place to go or...?

Went to noel lemon leeming but they wree useless.

I contacted the guy at dish tv and he was really helpful but the big catch is...
Quote
Because the S7090 is a Freeview certified unit it has to comply with Freeview's specifications. One of these specification is that uses cannot skip over ad breaks easily and hence the smallest skip amount is 10 minutes. You can still fast forward through ad breaks but you still need to watch the break to ensure that you resume play at the correct location. The Ultraplus is not a Freeview certified unit and is thus able to have any skip settings that the manufacturer wants to implement.

Don't think I can live without the skip function. After years of DVDs and VHS I always skip the ad breaks by going +4 mins. Having to watch the fast forward version is a pain in the neck

Could get the hard drive replaced on the ultra plus as it's under warranty but the agents told me that other customers have had problems and they're not convinced that it would sort it so they prefer to take it back

the guy at satlink wasn't very helpful by email and he doesn't have a landline I can phone so i didn't want to deal with him
