what might be the cause of a car using far more petrol than usual?

i'd like to see if there are any simple checks I could do to find the cause before having to take it to the mechanic  eek

What's the car?

mazda proceed

it played up badly just before its warrant, but suddenly came right again so the mechanic was hesitant to fiddle with the car at that point. but i can feel a hesitancy when driving, if you know what i mean? and its chewing through almost twice as much fuel as usual

Could be any one of many sensors too, do you know how to run a diagnostics test on the cars computer?

It sounds like it's running rich. Oxygen sensor would be the first thing to test.

Ours used a whole lot more petrol than it should too when we drove up to Christchurch on Friday

because I left my handbag in a cafe in Oamaru and we were 100kms up the road when I missed it, we had to go back for it  /s]

Yep sure will.

Maybe easiest to ask on one of these forums, you don't need to join but if you did then use a avatar of a hot chick and mention that your boyfriend is useless at car stuff and you need help you'll have nerdy car dweebs tripping over themselves to help
