Is it a realistic expectation for people in Wellington to stay put in the event of a big earthquake?

I think what might have spooked a lot of people in Wellington during recent earthquakes is the aftermath of the Christchurch quakes especially regarding buildings coming down. I don't think I'd happily hang around especially in the Wellington CBD, but of course there is a serious danger to being out on the streets of Wellington city surrounded by stuff that could potentially crush you to death.

Yeah it's a bit different seeing it happen in other places in the world but when it's close to home and it happened to people you have an affinity with it carries a lot more gravitas
