That good chap.... stopped folk (perhaps like me) from adopting a Herd mentality

More importantly though ....what did anyone else in the group "stop" and why would there be an expectation upon that particular chap to stop something?

Or did you mean perhaps ...did that man stop believing in his fellow countrymen or their interpretation of good sense?
