So

Suppose there's a message board  and suppose at least one of the members of that site  is stalking at least one of the other members.

You know, stuff like hang up phone calls, stuff arriving in the letter box, vague non specific threats on board, purporting to be "innocent" posts, random acts of vandalism to property, vehicles and stuff

If sufficient "proof" was presented to the administrators, moderators, whoever,  of this hypothetical site that these things were indeed happening

what, if any, should be their actions ?

Should the stalker be banned from posting? or
Should the stalkee suck it up?

Opinions please

Thanks for your concern regarding the timing of my post Sam
But as this is a board on which threads and posts cannot be deleted, then  I remain unconcerned about the lateness of the hour.

I think Bytey is right. Police is the way. Banning from a MB will do nothing if someone is doing that

You have assumed that if this was happening in real life and that if it wasn't a hypothetical situation - that the Police would not have been involved?  (Not to mention Telecom and other Agencies)  I'm sure that if it was, they would have been

However,

As I have already stated, - I am interested in the opinons of other members as to what they think should happen on site

And if it is happening .. then I wouldn't be happy to just suck it up .. I would be doing something constructive to stop it.

Oh. Well yup ... if someone stalkies in real life and it is proven, I think they should get da boot from a decent MB. Doesn't pay to have people that stalky on a MB, it isn't safe for people.

i dont think its up to the site to take responsibility, if it is happening in "real life" how is that related to the site?

if there is veiled threats on the board, then what can others do? they are veiled, and only those who are saying or receiving them know what its really about.

if there are obvious threats on the board, then maybe an unofficial warning would suffice, and if it carries on, an official one would be warranted.

but in saying that, if the person who is being threatened sticks around and makes opportunities for the other person to make threats on the board, then they really should look at themselves and decide whether being on the board is best for them. because if they are truly worried then they should do ANYTHING they can to stop it.

i agree with other stuff, banning etc are more likely to inflame the situation. even cops will tell the other person that things like trespass orders should only be used if the situation is at a point where that is the last resort, because it usually inflames the situation and can result in worse things happening.

personally, if the person is making obvious threats on the board, and doing it off the board it just makes them thick, cos they have made threats in a public manner, so cant really say they didnt threaten anybody if the cops do come knocking.

if it is all over internet stuff, then the stalker needs to grow up and realise what is real life, the stalkee needs to do what they need to to stop inflaming the situation. (hmm that kinda sounds like i am blaming the stalkee, not what i mean, rather its about doing what you can to protect yourself, and sometimes that does mean stopping from doing stuff they normally would untill it all calms down)

if it relates to real life stuff, then its not the problem of the board whatsoever and some people just need to learn how to handle situations better

If there is enough "evidence" for a moderator or admin to boot someone there is enough for a criminal harassment warning that would encompass physical actions, phone and internet actions... then if the stalker can't pull their head out of their own ass long enough to see what they're doing and continue these actions they get charged for harassment and it's a "see you in court"

So the board would in effect be almost a 'trespassed' area for them unless they behave themselves COMPLETEY!

Thanks for your input guys

So the concensus seems to be that the stalkee should do whatever they can to stay away from the possibility of "being available" for the stalker to stalk.  In effect - banning themselves from the hypothetical message board.

So the stalkee goes, to protect themselves and the stalker gets to stay and move onto their next target

crime deserves punishment, being a victim does not!

Some people are lifes victims and drag crap to them, but MOST people don't and they don't deserve the crap, so stand up for them hypothetical selves and tell the sod to sod off or legal action will be taken

    Diamond girl

Most likely as you said, what can the police do... trot around to the person and smack their hand - like people that have a protection order out against them - does that piece of paper stop them in reality, no it does not.   I'd hire some bros if I were in that hypothetical position and deal with the perpetrator myself because sad fact is the law cannot always protect us, even when we are in the right.

it's hard to ignore when it's gotten physical tho dab!

collie the same judge sees the same people coming in front of them too often and they do go away!  However the drips it doesn't stop are not Joe Average taking an opportunity... again MOST people would think twice about it getting dragged into court and into the local newspaper and friends and family finding out...

And yes dab, I believe that is the most effective way, on the board.
(Real life stuff, of course is dealt with by the other means already mentioned)

A hypothetically persistant stalker, however, would be difficult to avoid and the whole business would become tiresome

I look at it this way, we all (most of us collie) like to be law abiding citizens and know the police should be the first port of call... If the dork is dumb enough to ignore the law then he's asked for it to be taken up a notch

I think if Admin knew a person was being stalky, they would ban them. If there is solid proof of it, it could be forwarded to them. Admin here would look after the members against such a person.

So the concensus seems to be that the stalkee should do whatever they can to stay away from the possibility of "being available" for the stalker to stalk.  In effect - banning themselves from the hypothetical message board.

So the stalkee goes, to protect themselves and the stalker gets to stay and move onto their next target

i wouldnt consider it banning themselves from the board, rather taking a break till it all dies down and has there been any indication that this stalker is going to move on to someone else?

Something's always coming you can hear it in the ground, It swells into the air
With the rising, Rising sound
And never comes but shakes the boards and rattles all the doors

What are we waiting for?
