The scale of the voting process in the US means that there is far more chance of errors occuring. New York city on its own has more than twice the population of this country, so it would be silly to try and count an election result usuing the methods that we use here. Eventually, we will all switch to computerised voting,the larger countries need to do it to cope with the massive amounts of data being collected. Once the security and bugs have been ironed ou, electronic voting will be safer and more accurate than the current outdated methods used here.

the polls before hand are very close to the mark. 

if it is miles out then you can bet your bottom dollar someone fiddled the numbers.  As has happened in several of the states last time, (well over the chance factor) only I cannot remember which ones.
