Title: What would cause a car to leak oil?
Post by: IceQueen on Mon 28 April, 2008 - 12:41 am
I've had the fuel pump replaced with a new one. But it's still leaking oil real bad. I've been screwed by mechanics before, so I need some ideas on what the problem 'could' be.

It's a mitsi chariot 89 auto

It's due for it's next warrant. It failed the last one due to an oil leak which is why the fuel pump was replaced. So I'm fully expecting it to bloody well fail again. AND it's leaving a f**king mess on my driveway  :hobo:

where is it leaking from scoobs?

if it's leaking heaps then it would pay not to drive it...you'll blow the thing up if you do.

if it's still leaking from the fuel pump (sounds odd, cus fuel isn;t oil) then take it back to the garage and ask them to fix it properly. it seems wird that if it had an oil leak they would fix a fuel pump?

Yeah I kinda wondered about that too  :embarresed:

It stopped leaking for a couple of days after they did it and AA passed it after that, so I figured they knew what they were talking about. But now I'm having to put oil in it every week. It's leaking at the front of the vehicle.

Sounds pretty weird to me too, fixing the fuel pump for an oil leak ... The fuel pump generally only needs fixing if it stops going altogether, or there's a smell of fuel when you're driving

Have a look under the bonnet too, see if you can see where it's coming from, and underneath, the sump looks like a tank at the bottom with a nut in it, see if it's coming from around there ... And check around the oil filter too, that will be under the bonnet somewhere and looks a bit like one of them kerosene bombs ...

sounds bad having to add oil once a week, does it blow smoke as well???

i'm guessing it's probably a blown head gasket Stu.

Scoobs said it appears to be coming out the front...but i don't know much about mitzys or their bretheran buses.

but seeing as scoobs seems to be able to see oil at the front then my money is on the gasket at the mo.

Yup, she's gotten very smokey since the last inspection.

It's not the oil filter, that's been replaced as well. But I'll have a look underneath tomorrow for the other thing. Might be hard to see anything since I don't have a pit or anything to drive the car up on to lift it up. But I'll try.

Better bloody not be! Had that replaced just a year ago and still paying it off!

oh, could be a just a dodgy oil filter then...sometimes if they thread gets stripped putting it in then that may cause it.

i still wouldn't drive it tho.....besides, sounds like your spending as much on oil as you are on petrol.

  I wonder if he ripped me off further...

I was told about this cheap and honest   mechanic. So I went. The car kept stalling and was a pig to run. He said it was the head gasket. $1000 later I was still having problems with it stalling, running like a pig etc etc...

So I took it to another mechanic who did a basic tune up for $200 and she was running sweet. Oil was dripping, but nothing major like it is now.

Now I'm onto my third mechanic (only because he allows me to pay off the bill and because he's a mitsi specialist) And so far he's been really good. Figured out that the first problem ^^^ was water getting into the engine cause the rubber seal was stuffed (can't believe it wasn't spotted by the others)

But hmmmm the work he did on the exhaust last time was shoddy and now the oil leak is getting worse after the work he'd done (replacing the fuel thingy)

Fark  :splat:  I feel like I'm getting screwed over big time  :hobo:

That's pretty typical for a mitsi, they're dogs and generally spend more time getting fixed than driven

best to get it patched up, and sell it, make it somebody elses problem  :hehehe:

damn! ripped off!

ah well scoobs, live an learn huh.

89 is getting on a bit...i'd fix and sell too...or trade it in as is.

Have you done any home job tests for a blown head gasket?

pop the bonnet - take the radiator cap off - start the car and see what the water does.

You might need 2 people. If it bubbles - youre up for another expensive head job  :hehehe:  not funny i know but my words were.

I agree with the others - bit f**kin random changing ya fuel pump.

mr bytey reckons to check your oil seals - leaking oil does not necessarily indicate a head gasket - thats usually a water thing as in if your head gasket was gone your car would be over heating all the time and running real hot.

You may have said those i didnt read the whole thread

Title: Re: What would cause a car to leak oil?
Post by: bytey on Thu 1 May, 2008 - 08:48 pm
ok now that i have read whole thread - I dont think it be your head gasket.

Ive head that go on 3 of my cars

Title: Re: What would cause a car to leak oil?
Post by: dab on Thu 1 May, 2008 - 08:52 pm
your right bytey. the water cap thing is a good indicator..ususally you'll see oil on the surface.

i was thinking about my old ford. they leak oil from the front of the head gasket when blown.

whenever we are following a car blowing out blue oily smelling smoke hubby yells out get your oil rings fixed or dump it :hehehe:  hope it's nothing too major for you scoobs

Title: Re: What would cause a car to leak oil?
Post by: bytey on Thu 1 May, 2008 - 08:58 pm
ive had the gasket go in a prelude, datsun wagon and a mazda.

All 3 of em were using ridiculous amounts of water - all running th eneedle up right near hot - some with steam.

when my sisters head gasket went her car was literally pouring water onto the ground underneath it as it was driving.

Ok. Thanks guys. I'll check all that out tomorrow.

I'd love to get rid of this car, but at the moment, it's not an option

nice pics!

anyways...have you been able to trace the oil leak to any particular chunk of metal?

Title: Re: What would cause a car to leak oil?
Post by: IceQueen on Fri 2 May, 2008 - 06:41 pm
sorry dab.  :embarresed:  That was the best I could do.

The second pic shows where the oil is dripping from, but couldn't get any closer.

The white circle I've tried to draw is where the oil is dripping. The other white bit is covered in oil as well.

being dumb has nothing to do with being ripped off scoobs.
you just wern't aware of what happens to engines is all and were unlucky, it's more a case of being taken advantage of.

and 'newton' is the guy who discovered gravity.

Title: Re: What would cause a car to leak oil?
Post by: bytey on Fri 2 May, 2008 - 09:58 pm
wtf has newton got to do with anything?

Title: Re: What would cause a car to leak oil?

the oil.

it tends to follow the laws of gravity.

Update... Shatner took a look underneath the car and it 'appears' to be the seal on the oil filter (thank god it wasn't anything expensive!) He cleaned it up (very black and dirty) and found an old rag that had been left there by the last mechanic   So now I will be able to take it to the mechanic and tell them to do an oil change and also tell them about their 'rag' incident.

g37b motor if you want to get the filter from supercheap. Might pay to ring supercheap for a price if you're having someone supply and fit, that way you'll know if the mechanic is trying to rip you off.

oil change is a fairly straightforward job with the right tools, mechanic should be able to give you a price before he starts.

can you not do an oil change and replace the filter yourself?

f**k all cost - apart from the filter and the oil that way.

It' a prick of an engine to work on, needs an experienced mechanic to change the filter. it's a transverse mounted block with a bloody great subframe member right under the oil filter, If there's a factory procedure that will allow access to the filter without  having to remove the alternator for access, I don't know it.

Sadly, my ex got rid of most of my workshop tools, so I can only offer advice.

Title: Re: What would cause a car to leak oil?
Post by: bytey on Sat 3 May, 2008 - 11:20 pm
That seems strange to block acess to an oil filter of all things.

Specially with an alternator - they can be a pain eh, or is it starter motors I am thinign of.

Title: Re: What would cause a car to leak oil?
Post by: Coach on Sat 3 May, 2008 - 11:27 pm
alternator is relatively easy with the right tools,I just dont have them.

Easy to tell alternator and starter motor apart, alternator runs off a rubber drive belt and pulley, starter motor you can't see any moving parts.

Chariot is a 7 seater, length is kept down by mounting the motor transverse[sideways, like a mini].Transverse engines are much harder to service than say a straight 6, unless you know the factory procedures.

I wasnt confused about telling them apart.

I also know what transverse means.

But ta!  :ok:

I thought transverse engines were pretty similar to regular engines to service. And I also thought in some cases (depending on what was being serviced) they were easier.

But I am just a girl.

Blood fantastic eh Dab. I'm so relieved. What's the bet if I'd gone straight to the mechanic again instead of asking for help from trustworthy peeps on here, I would've been screwed over again.
