I was just on Google Maps, so thought I'd show mine as seen from space looks tidier that way

1. Boxed vege garden, looks crooked in that shot - you can see the wool bale beside it, so I must've been weeding that day
2. The front bark/succulent gardens, yawn
3. The natives walkway garden

My vege garden when I first moved in and transplated what I grew in buckets

I decided to make it a little larger to fit all the strawberry plants in that were very kindly gifted to me by a wonderful person :)

My garden now :) It's very blurry sorry, and only decided to make it bigger today, so it's not finished yet. Will pop an updated pic up when the job is done.

I've also got some raspberries growing on the other side of the house and my potatoes are growing in here

I've added a layer on there since I took that pic.

Oh and the children's vege garden :)

sounds like my kind of plant

I remember the ornamental pepper plant my grandmother had - she'd always tell us grandkids not to pick or eat them! but they were certainly interesting colours, the wee peppers.

My vege garden when I first moved in

It's taking a while to dig up the extension. Not far below that gorgeous topsoil is rock and clay, so I'm having to do a little at a time trying to remove as much rock as I go. No hurry. I won't be using that part of the garden until next season. My vege garden now  :-D

My potato patch at the beginning

Just a few weeks later....

The kids garden. I nicked the bricks from the back that were giving that garden some definition for my vege garden. So this one needs a bit of work yet.

:) it's kept me busy that's for sure. but so worth it. the last couple of nights we've been able to eat some of the carrots and silverbeet that we (I!) grew, and the kids have chowed down with pride  :hehehe:  Can't wait for the strawberries to do their stuff :)

lots of tomato under my home made shelter and some peppers doing well from seed

It would be a whole new learning curve for me to grow in sand, I know it has its good points- doesnt turn to mud in the winter for one (hear the jealousy).
you know - that would be an ideal place for hydroponics too    :monkey:     :hehehe:

and scooby - what a neat job you have made!!  You just have to be pleased with how it is turning out.

Mine is scruffy, I admit it... will charge up camera and take an update photo to put in here. (After I get kelly to mow the grass again for me  :hehehe:  )

Have my planted my tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, two rows of sweet corn, 3  short rows of peas ordinary peas and a few sugar snap peas and the row of yams are up too.

Row of carrots being harvested, another just planted and all the usual brassicas, in various stages, beetroot, um.. onions and leeks, celery and silverbeet... think that is about all

Getting desperate for those 4 rows of potatoes to be mounded up... must be almost time for kumeras too (must cut off the top of a couple of kumeras and get them sprouting).  And really must shift my asparagus to a better spot.

And the raspberry suckers I still haven't shifted. going to be too late soon. Also the Rhubarb ready to pick.

Still to chainsaw a hedge or two to let some sun into the front flower garden

... why am I sitting here?

:-(   I have only just dug my mini 2x1 metre Bug nursery patch over! Not sure what to plant in the mini patch. Not tomatoes - bugs got them two years in a row - so thinking of herbs...........and other stuff!  :stunned:

Title: Re: How does your garden grow?
Post by: PaganRaven on Wed 4 November, 2009 - 02:02 pm
what do you eat most of in the way of veg or fruit or flowers?  :hehehe:

Title: Re: How does your garden grow?
Post by: Collie on Wed 4 November, 2009 - 02:33 pm
can't fail veges & herbs and fruit:  broccoli, cabbage, carrots, dwarf beans (butter and / or green),  lettuce, potatoes, radishes, red onions, celery, chives, parsley, peppers, zucchini,  rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries.

sure to be lots more but limited size, means you will need to be picky -grow what you like to eat most.

Title: Re: How does your garden grow?
Post by: PaganRaven on Wed 4 November, 2009 - 02:46 pm
:bored: I failed with the carrots. It didn't help that the dog ran through the patch I'd just seeded and mixed up the carrots with the radishes  and dug spots to be 'helpful'  :-@

All the branches I burned last weekend gave me potash to sprinkle on the soil  :jump: at least I think it did  :embarrassed:

Title: Re: How does your garden grow?
Post by: Wolfdini on Wed 4 November, 2009 - 03:35 pm
love brocolli, but  with 2 x 1 meter little patch, about 4 plants would fill it!!  :hehehe: Thinkig of cherry toms in a large pot (bugs don't touch the cherry toms) zuchinni, and peppers. Lettuce is out - always go yucky with all the rain here, maybe basil and stuff. Beans are temperamental here in Auckland - and raspberies need space. Too many birds for strawberries. We are feeding baby thrushes and the like, Thomas one, two and 100!!!  :hehehe:
They come up and see me and eat the cats food. No, not Benjamins!!!
So prefer the birds to fesh vegies.

pessimist.   You just want an excuse to give up that job.
(I say just do it  :hehehe:  )  then you'll have lots of time to grow veges to stop you from starving  :hehehe:

You set up a hose - bung holes in the hose over each pot - watering is then as hard as turning on the tap (cheaper than buying the fancy trickle irrigation ones and if you are really keen, buy a hose timer - so it turns itself off  after the allocated time.  You might be surprised how much you can fit into a small space - any soil you can see from directly above is wasted space  :monkey:   All you need is high fertility (and stakes)

Title: Re: How does your garden grow?

:ohok: wolfie has to be highly fertile????  :tmi:

I have a couple of blueberry bushes in buckets, and they've flowered  :jump: but I wasn't sure if they are self-fertilising or need to pair up?

aaaaaaaaaaand, I want to make some paths, but need them done el cheapo  so what is a good material to use along the paths? I don't want pebbles as they end up everywhere.

:siryessir:  point taken!!! I already have the courtyard garden on irrigation. The heat of summer does me in - so I do not tend ot go outside much when I get home from work  where the air cond is lousy and we are sitting in a sweat house of uncirculated air..... :ignore:

sigh - my give it up and live in the back of the car. will just have to move it 2-3 inches every week so that I don't get fined by the council.

Could buy a cheap trailer and set up vegie patch in there and just tow it around the country to match the weather. Howzat for initiative!!  :ok:

Could use straw along path, or fine bark. cheaper than pebbles. More natural too.

The lawn was dead from all the cars parked on it so i figured why not concrete it.

it all slopes ever so slightly into the centre where there's a stormwater drain. A lot like a shower tray

:wtf:   sacrilegious talk in this thread... concreting the back yard!!   :lmfao:  Get to the man cave with THAT kind of talk

 :devilangel:

and concrete isn't THAT easy to look after, I thought that it was, once upon a time.  so we made a big concrete pad for the kids to play on (and cars to park on etc etc)  The other day I swept off so much tree debris and concrete grit and dirt and dust etc was only a couple of months worth... and then there is the green it grows too.

The mystery of my day though is how on earth I got a burnt cleavage err frontage when most of the time I was bending over weeding    :distrust:

my wee garden - I don't think it big enough even for Peter Rabbit to hide in

I dug a new garden alongside the path, as the mower couldn't get into the corner to trim the grass
(http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m69/celticshyunicorn/gardencorner.jpg)

the other end of it
(http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m69/celticshyunicorn/gardenedge.jpg)

what it looks like from the footpath, and of course its only just planted with seedlings so they have a lot of growing to do
(http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m69/celticshyunicorn/gardenview.jpg)

the other side of the path, which badly needs developing, just has some lavender bushes growing (they were put there temporarily about 5 years ago  :hehehe:

the only real bit of garden that was made when we bought the house, I've added plants, and once the house is painted am wanting to add some trellis for the climbing roses there, and put in a wisteria
(http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m69/celticshyunicorn/gardengrowing2.jpg)

my sweetpeas that didn't die over winter, am training them up the trellis which is an archway

Here's a challenge for you (or not)  :hehehe:  Name the plants that I can't name in these pictures  :p

The poppies are doing well Raven. Can't wait for them to flower! Didn't realise they grew so high. Will have to rethink where I put them next time round  :hehehe:

Here's my front fence line

Purple ones are what Raven said they were.
Salmon one is alstromeria
Left side of rosemary might be perennial lobelia (does it have a red flower - or blue?) If it is a blue flower - then it is something else but can't remember its name!  :hehehe:
Right side of rosemary might be a coprosma

nope - coprosma have leaves that can be up to 1 - 1 1/2 long. Depends on variety - tend to be the coloured ones. Corokia have small leaves tho' - always!   :p
And yes - I have a plant from the rescue bin just waiting ever so patiently to go into its special little place in my garden!!   :hehehe:

can't work from home unfortunately! But am changing jobs this year so will see what happens huh! Unfortunately the big smoke is where my business needs to be for a while until it takes off  - then I can concentrate solely on that!
Want to buy a property out in Coatsville perhaps. Maybe have an animal rescue/healing centre - all in the dream pipeline.  :-D

I got a bucket full of edible plums from it just now, and that's less than half of what's on there, our yard seems to grow fruit and veges in abundance, our pear tree is looking good too, that always grows heaps of edible fruit as well :yeah:

I've done some pottering around the garden, tied  & tidied up the tomato plants (again) picked peas(again) must take the knife back out with me - 3 heads of cauli need picking, damned annoying when they all come ready at exactly the same time a couple of huge cabbages ready too   done a bit of weeding and am ready to plant the next couple of rows of peas and carrots.

Planted up the next succession of vege seeds in the seed starter gizmo and a few seeds of autumn flowering annuals.

Shifted Kelly the pony to the vege garden to eat down the track.  Cleaned out her water trough and its re filling, god help me if I forget it.... be tidy as in a weeks time.
Almost ready to plant a late planting of potatoes too, the seed potatoes are preparing themselves in trays.

all chooks are laying again now too, so that's 5 small eggs a day to collect and use up somehow.... oh the abundance of food  atleast its cheap to live here for a while.

very nice.

so how do you store them?

Title: Re: How does your garden grow?
Post by: Collie on Fri 15 January, 2010 - 10:34 pm
old 44 gallon drums been modified

they have quite a few holes drilled into them, plus has a core down in the middle of the drum, again to keep it airated.

Once dug, you carefully dry then ie leave them in the sun for a while, then turned every single one of them over and leave them drying in the sun for a bit longer.

Then I start sorting according to size etc.

Stabbed ones go to one side for they will most likely rot.
Green ones go to another side ( turn them into seed potatoes)
tiny tiddlers goes to the pigs - (amazes me that people pay big money for those fiddly damned things)
small to med sized ones I tend to give away a lot of to family etc
and the rest and biggest ones I keep and put into the drums. (I got selfish after a while, figured bugger it, I do all the work)

They are kept in a cool shed, and the drums are lidded.

Just like they did in Granny's day.

Well my haul from the boxed spuds wasn't as good as I was hoping. But I can't complain. A few were rotten right at the bottom layer and many will be going to Collie's pigs if she wants them. But this lot will feed us for a few nights and I've still got a few tyres growing spuds that need harvesting soon and the garden row.

people pay a fortune for those baby spuds Scoobs, I'm told they are the best - we're just way too lazy here to bother.

if you want to fire them to our pigs then sure thing, they will happily gobble them up.

and honestly that looks like a pretty good haul to me - how many plants were there?

marg is disgusting (or atleast the idea of eating it is.)

I'm having a ham sandwich for lunch right now - Ilike butter but was too lazy to spread it on the bread -  so its a (big chunk of home cured ham between a couple of slices of bread.

scoobs, the skins peel off very easily after they are cooked too.

and those are very healthy looking raspberries you have there.

assuming this place is still going and if Stu will tell me where his new home is... Stu, after you've shifted I'll bring you a few raspberry plants, you can have your own, if you like?

Scoobs, I suggest you save some of those potatoes (either the ones I gave you or yours) as seed potatoes, chuck them loosely in a bag in the shed and forget about them, let them sprout.  Those planters, are still a great idea but I'd put maybe 3 potatoes in each one and give it another go, not too late to put some seed potatoes in now too for a late crop.

I am now the proud owner of an acre. My sweetheart and I finally have the time to do a lot of subtraction, the previous owners did not take of the land. A prime example is us finding buried cigarette in a raised garden bed!

My snow peas are producing already and my lettuces are starting to take off.

My darling did some serious pruning today, we found a small but determined citris tree that had been blacked out by some monstrous weeds.

Here's our lavender hedge at the back from a couple of years ago before the dogs wrecked it  I pulled it out and planted rosemary about 14 months ago which is quickly becoming a hedge. You can also see the sickly looking yellow yukka  :hehehe:  that has now become  huge and green.

Try putting 'man traps' around the garden. These could consist of bottles of a nice lager or beer. If you find these traps unsuccessful you could try going for a bacon and egg pie bribe.

Well the getting my dad to the garden center to help pick plants worked.  He turned up this morning with his gardening tools and the transformation began.

Early days yet but wow we moved dirt, trimmed trees, planted plants and I broke a nail.

He said he will flick over during the week while I am at work to do more.  :cited:  I better buy him a fab gift.

been to the garden centre.

Had a wee spend.

Got 14 natives, short, tall, verigated etc. Lots of colour.

When this friggin wind disappears, gunna be busy planting along the back fence.
It's grey brick and unstained wood. Colourless and boring.

Thing is, I got home with me 14 natives and realised that's not going to be enuf!

They're going to love me at the garden centre. :hehehe:

sooo wanna see that pic

I in 2 days (not consecutive) have cleaned up two horse paddocks, cleaned out two troughs, so they have lovely fresh and lean water again, filled the wheely bin twice with bits of junk and rubbish, cleaned up the orchad, removing a trailer load of branches and weed trees - pepper trees and wooly nightshade.  Mown the grass and if I say so myself is looking mighty tidy (in comparison atleast)

And today cleaned up the front section / gardens - two trailer loads of weeds and prunings and spent plants ... oh and canna lillys that were taking over one area, removed a heap of them.

and I'm knackered
but tomorrow I need to clean up the cleaning up

  I picked 3 dandelions out of my blue corner garden. Section is 2 years old so my gardens are a bit sparse at the moment.

I think we planted spinach at the wrong time as it is going to seed, the kids love spinach and I throw it in just about everything I make - but it's not going to work this time of the year - I'm sure the last lot I planted was towards winter because I had a great crop all winter. Ah well My Nan always said when she came visiting and met me at my front door holding onto a bunch of weeds that I didn't have much of a green finger - which is a little bit embarrassing because all my grands and my parents are fantastic gardeners.

been making juicies to drink - watermelon, beetroot, raspberries and apple
stunning red colour and delicious.

Raw of course

and well done cylly

and Lux its a vege that will grow in the winter time too (just slower)

The triffids have taken over here again in my absence so I'm beating them into submission, almost got my vege garden all weeded so i can plant a new succesion of plants so I have a continuous supply coming ready to eat.

My new garden grows quite well.

Lovely white standard roses out the front, red at the back.

Lots of violet as ground cover and grannys bonnet popping up everywhere.

Even some grape hyacinth here and there, a couple of lilac trees and a big section of irises.

Lots of shades of purple but at least it's not bloody pink  :hobo:

The owner is not a prissy fiddly gardener so no tears spilt about things dying off or needing pruning.

There's a LARGE apricot tree in the middle of the back section which is currently shedding it's leaves so theres lots of green and gold colour everywhere. Luvly stuff.

Today I got all my fruit trees pruned - some a little harsher than others, but as most are only 2-3 years old, I'm hoping that this will mean a really good crop of fruit this year
Also got the first wee green noses up through the dirt in the little greenhouse for my vegetable self sufficiency project...  Odells lettuce and tree lettuce!  Will pop into the Clevedon markets tomorrow to see if Running Brook Seeds have anything new and interesting - also need to get a bucket o mushrooms!

Hey Collie - how are your Mushrooms doing?

Ya Ya - I have printed the info, and will talk with himself tonight

Am thinking the area behind the green shed stays nice and mo*st all year round, so that might be a good spot for some doweled logs...?  Oyster, s**take and a couple of others...  Mmmmmmmmm

Little seedies are planted in the greenhouse to get them started nice and early, and I have little rows of lettuces which have popped up  - all very exciting for the middle of winter!  Once they're properly soaked, I'll start a whole patch of blue peas so that they're ready to go out in spring too.

um.. yes. yes, good idea.   :monkey: yes.

my winter crop  everything in miniature - if i stay here though, the soil will be fantastic for growing next year, all the horse s**t and compost i incorporated into it - looks lusciously rich now, and has big fat worms working it

still got broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, peas, beans carrots (btw those veges are red carrots, yams and kumera in that photo along with the pumpkin) and beetroot growing in my little garden plots.
Grew a heap of tomatoes from a single plant and turned most of them into a yummy chutney ... not too bad for a transient

Ooooooh Beautiful!

I've just made up some more sauerkraut - one with caraway seeds, one with cumin seeds, so we'll see how they both turn out.  Got to play with the new food processor to shred the cabbage, and BOY does it work a treat!  Will know in 7-10 days how good it is - just used salt, no whey this time.

I've just come in from planting 6 different types of seeds - from vanilla passionfruit to stinging nettles - so will see how much pops up.  Have planted some balm of gilead too, so if you want seedlings later on, let me know - brilliant stuff for nasal and sinus congestion.

My plan is to be totally self sufficient for eggs, chicken, fruit and vegetables by the end of the year.   :jump:

Title: Re: How does your garden grow?
Post by: Collie on Mon 15 July, 2013 - 06:27 pm
it actually takes very little effort if you know what youre doing.

I have found down this way - the weeding has been practically non existent - was too dry for weeds and weeding is what always takes the most time, so I've been as pleased as punch.  I have 'made' my soil (it was sand) by incorporating bought compost and horse poo mixed into the sand (with some nitraphoska - blood and bone would have been as good if not better, but that wasnt readily available

With fresh soil as such - no build up of weed seeds and 9 months later that mix has broken down into a fabulous looking mix, the plants are VERY healthy and no weeds.  Come spring, if I am still here that mix will give me a brilliant harvest.  All i've done is bought a few vege seedlings about every 6 weeks, and that has given me a succession of fresh veges.

WE could talk you through it step by step if you want Lux, it is really very simple, like anything, once you know how.

Whaaaaaaat??  Not up here it ain't!  Was just in NW two days ago and it was $9.99 - at Countdown today it was $23.99!!!

Nah - Sauerkraut has a bad rep, but is actually really good!  Good for you too, but don't tell anyone I said that

Ooooooooooh - just took Hubby out to see the wee baby lettuces in the greenhouse - I have about 4 varieties which have popped up nicely, so should cover off when the ones I have in the garden have done their dash.

Is it time for wine yet??

Tons of self seeded silverbeet too - so either we or the chooks will feast well on that!

My Spuddies in bags in the greenhouse are to the top of the bag, so have to bury them again tomorrow - and hopefully they'll be ready for Sept 21 - Spring Equinox BBQ at my place!  Will have half a cow on the BBQ, (local from down the road) and the rest sourced from my garden and unheated but still very warm greenhouse.
