Yup byteys right I don't think  brand matters I bought my machine (it's a brother) about 15 years ago it's very basic but it does what I need , my SIL has a fancy janome(sp) with an overlocker and stuff it cost her a bomb ...like a couple of grand all up so when I want to do fancy stuff I pop out there and borrow it

you just dont need that fancy s**t eh.

My sister makes clothes and is doing a fashion design thing at uni and she uses her basic little sewing machine for everything.

However she can use th eones at uni (I assume - dont know for fact) if she needs to do anything fancy.

I am gonna get her to sew up some jackets for my dog after I have cut them up and prepped them.

well once I get the machine...

I'll be sewing up some pj's for the kids and myself to start with. Pants and long sleeved tees.

Was also considering doing some duvets/quilts and selling on TM. But gotta do the pricing first to see if it's worth it.

JMHO

I used to sew a lot but since the advent of the Warehouse and co  it is no cheaper to buy the material (remember you still have to sew it and if you stuff anthing up - it is going to cost even more)than it is to buy the already made item at the warehouse, and considering for children they out grow stuff so fast there isn't a lot of point in going for the quality that home-made will give you.  Now days - I go look at the ultra expensive $300.00 plus clothes and copy it for (eg) $60.00 plus the hours it takes to put it together.

I have a Bernina - lower, mid range- all the basic stuff which is what you use 99.8 % of the time and the other few gismos are handy for that once in a blue moon stuff.

I used to love sewing. So I will be doing it cause I like it and cause there's nothing like the personal touch for the kids Wink You should see their faces light up when I make them something as opposed to buying it. They love it. (for now)

so agree with what you were saying above....my nana used to make us nghties and dressing gowns and i loved mine.

We tip for ya scoobs, make sleeves and length longer then necessary and put a fold in and sew it...when the kids get taller and their arms longer you can unpick the fold oyu have put in (I dont mean down by the hem either). Thats what my nana used to do - its hard to explain what i mean though, so might have to take a pic of something.

I think I know what you mean... The fold turns outwards so that it looks like it's meant to be that way. Sorta fashionable kinda thing. Then unpick and re-sew it as they grow.

With them sometimes if you buy sheets on special you can use a sheet as the back and only buy the nicer stuff for the top.

Ive known some people who see a nice patterned sheet and just use them instead..
