What's a reasonable download speed for broadband in a small rural town?

It shouldn't matter that it's a small rural town, should be dependent on the connection is from the exchange - these days you should expect at least 3Mb/s no matter where you are

and crap, we used to have Go Large, and was lucky to get 3.5Mb/s, just tried on our new plan

that's fast still can't watch YouTube clips most of the time though

You make me envious I get 1mb/s download 128kb/s upload - if I'm lucky

If you go to your ISP website it should have a box. Punch in your phone number and it will tell you the maximum speed for that line

However your ISP can limit the speed according to your plan so it's a combination of your phone line, your plan and other factors

Telstra just abandoned the pricing plan that they first used when I joined, I'm paying $5 a month more for 'unrestricted access', but but but but guess what?

Your line speed is approximately 253.7 Kbps or 31.1 KB/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

I can't find any of that sort of info on my ISP site.

I do, however, get a delta rating - which is the signal strength between the closest and other wireless signals

oh hang on, 54.0Mbps it says for the wireless connection - would that be it?

No, that would be the wireless network, I doubt any Internet connection in the country can get up to 54Mbps Bah Humbug

Just do the speed test at http://speedtest.net to see how fast your Internet is

Nope, that's really slow, dialup is 0.05Mb/s, so you've got 7x dialup speed - I was expecting the big ping value, that's the delay from when you click a site/link etc, until it starts working(approx.), that's expected with Wireless Internet

my first test was to christchurch, the second to auckland.

I'm sure it does vary slightly, but if you're paying for the Gb expecting to download stuff, it would be nice if it was before you aged...

just by getting a better plan, are you on unlimited bandwidth?

and if you're currently downloading, it will show as a lot slower as well
