Is it possible for a manderine tree to grow using the seeds from a mandarine that's just been eaten? 
   

I've told miss5 to pop them in the bucket of dirt and see what happens - but no promises

Dunno, maybe. When I was a kid a few years ago I got a plum tree to grow from the stone.

Heard the bug man talking about this on sunday morning. The seeds will grow but what you get in the way of fruit production can be very random, as all citrus that you buy are grafted. But sounds like fun trying. I hope they grow!!

Mickey has it right - they will not grow true to the form of the parent plant... a very interesting experiment to see what you would get.

   well ummm the dog kinda made that plan void. But we'll try again with my next lot of mandarins. It'll be an interesting experience for the kids if anything 

Oh and ummm what is grafted?

where they take a slice from a branch of a tree they want to grow from, and splice it onto a branch from a tree base which is really hardy, so they splint and bandage the two together and (supposedly) get the best of both

generally they take the rootstock from a really tuff vigourous tree, and 'graft' on the nice fruiting tree onto it

one rule is that you can put them in the freezer for a while, and then take them out, to stimulate a winter so they 'sprout' during spring - not sure how long they have to be in the igloo for tho

we had great success with some acorns

all seeds are better off with a drying period.  the bigger the seed casing, the more so.

Then there is breaking the dormancy - some need scarifying, others need chilling, others still can do with having boiling water poured over them (eg parsnip) or chucked briefly in a fire.... and then there are weed seeds that'll grow no matter what!

Talking of weeds  i have an amazing crop under the bed feeder which I have been filling up with wild bird seed. Not sure what they are but they are growing better than anything else in the garden

I find it depends on whether the seed has been irradiated first, cause then it can't sprout, no sprout no grow, no birds....

   oh and read the packet carefully, cause some are for budgies, some for canaries, some for parrots

so you have to decide which bird you want first, cause everything is non-refundable too!

no, I believe each type of seed contained within will produce one kind of bird, so you could go through and pick out all the tiny black ones and hope it will grow a yellow canary....

then you should have asked at the counter before you purchased the packet 

and did they tell you you will need the special squirty stuff to activate the growth of said bird? some fancy name I think.....um......oh - H2O

maybe it might of been better buying the bird seed from the pet shop then instead of the garden center I will go back tomorrow and try for a refund
I mean they can tell I aint used it yet as I still have an empty cage.

will they sell that H20 stuff as well ?
is it expensive?
and lastly
will the colour of the h20 effect the colour of my new said bird?

well, you understand I'm not a professional   

but if your cage is spotless then you definitely haven't had any birds in there yet 

yes  you don't know what chemicals the garden centre may have mixed in - I mean its pretty common (so I've heard) for them to stuff a bit of maxi-crop in there for faster results

H2O - make sure you get the clear, untinted variety, and go with the top of the price range cause you are getting quality then - oh, Perrier I think it's called...

I didn't know that.

Though I know if you want to grow true to type, you grow from cuttings or usually grafts.
